1) An Update on NCHERM Happenings and Activities

  • As many of you know, NCHERM has a Special Counsel program for campuses that wish to engage us as outside legal counsel.  That program now has ten campuses participating, our highest number ever.  The two most recent, both large state institutions, have engaged us for specific projects of long-term campus culture change.  For one campus, the NCHERM consultants will be advising in the creation of a comprehensive student organization risk management framework, and for the other we are helping to implement a strategic student health and safety initiative.

  • NCHERM is now litigating on behalf of our college and university clients (defense of colleges only).  Two campuses with which we have had long-term consulting relationships have turned to us for their litigation needs (both student injury cases).  We appreciate the trust they have placed in us to represent their interests in court.

  • Our expert witness services continue to expand as well, with Brett Sokolow currently serving as an expert in three different college & university cases.

  • Changes to our website continue to improve our client services.  Newly added is a schedule of campus visits, a media section and our shopping cart is live and functioning well.

  • NCHERM Affiliated Consultant W. Scott Lewis, J.D. has been elevated to the position of Asst. Vice Provost for Judicial Affairs and Academic Integrity at the University of South Carolina.  Congrats Scott!  Scott will succeed Brett Sokolow as Editor of the Report on Campus Safety & Student Development in the fall, and Brett will become Editor Emeritus after 8 years at the helm of CS&SD.

2) Upcoming NCHERM Webinars

  • Legal Issues for Campus Counselors and Therapists – June 8th, 2007.  Featuring Brett Sokolow, J.D. and Carolyn Reinach Wolf, Esq.  The event announcement and registration are posted at Webinars.
  • Learning from Tragedy:  A Framework for Student Mental Health & Violence Prevention – July 10th, 2007.  A National Videoconference Co-Sponored by MAGNA Publications and featuring Brett A. Sokolow, J.D. and W. Scott Lewis, J.D.  The event announcement and registration are posted at Webinars.
  • The State of Campus Bystander Intervention Efforts – June 21st, 2007.  Featuring David Lisak, Ph.D., Victoria Banyard, Ph.D. and Brett A. Sokolow, J.D.  The event announcement will be posted next week, and registration will open then.

  • Look for additional events in August focusing on risk management for student athletes and facilitation training for peer educators (reschedule from this spring).  Also please visit our archive of 24 previously presented webinars, available for order on CD-ROM at Publications.

3) NCHERM FALL 2007 SCHEDULE OF CAMPUS VISITS

View our fall 2007 schedule. We have noted available dates in bold.  Take a look — maybe Brett will be nearby your campus soon.

To schedule a visit, please contact Kate Halligan, NCHERM’s Director of Client Relationships, NCHERM at (610) 579-3725 or kate@ncherm.org

4)  A New Student Program on Bystander Intervention from Brett Sokolow

What If The Plane Blew Up? A Program About Empowering Bystander Intervention

In this new program from Brett Sokolow, audience members will learn that when they see something amiss, often others do as well. If you act first, as a leader, you will find that others will help. But, if you do not lead, no one may follow. This one-hour program is aimed primarily at all-male audiences, but it can be offered to all-female audiences, or audiences of mixed genders. There are many ways in which bystander intervention will make a difference on a college campus, and “What if the Plane Blew Up?” can be focused on specific issues, depending on your needs. High-risk Drinking. Hazing. Sexual Assault. Prejudice. Or, it can be directed at multiple topics in which intervention can make all the difference between a crime and safety. Between life and death. Between right and wrong.  Read more about this program...

5) Free Article: "Some Kind of Hearing"

As with every issue, we provide you with what we hope is a thought-provoking article.  Below, please find an Op-Ed that Brett Sokolow wrote at the end of April, in response to the media coverage of the Virginia Tech tragedy. Access the article here...
